The Living Lab

The Living Lab

The Living Lab at HIT’s Department of Digital Medical Technologies – the only one of its kind in Israel and one of only a few worldwide – is a smart home facility designed for multidisciplinary R&D of advanced homecare and tele-health solutions. The Lab focuses mainly on developing, implementing, and evaluating aids for monitoring and intervention in the daily functioning of elderly and chronically ill individuals.

The 67m2 facility emulates a natural home environment – with a kitchen, dining table, bedroom, living room, and bathroom. The space and its furnishings are equipped with a range of sensors, cameras, an Alexa virtual assistant, social robots, and IoMT (Internet of Medical Things) devices – for unobtrusive, seamless multimodal monitoring of subjects’ cognitive, mental, behavioral, and physical functions.

Working in close collaboration with top clinicians, the Lab identifies and responds to real-world challenges, with a major emphasis on user friendliness and affordability, as well as compliance with Israeli regulations regarding safety, privacy, and information security. HIT’s Living Lab is a member of ENOLL – the European Network of Living Labs.

Below is a sample of innovative tools and technologies developed by HIT researchers at the Living Lab:

Geriatric functional assessment – a technological home-based tool for assessing the individual’s functional abilities: ADL (Activities of Daily Living) – self-care activities performed daily, such as eating, dressing, bathing, transferring between the bed and a chair, and using the toilet; and IADL (Instrumental Activities of Daily Living) – abilities that are essential for living independently, such as preparing meals, taking medications properly, and maintaining a daily schedule.

Age-related cognitive decline assessment – a novel neuro- cognitive assessment battery based on observing and measuring the individual’s Activities of Daily Living (ADL) in an environment that is as close as possible to a real home, instead of a hospital or clinic.
